In the year 1268 the Great Council of Serenìsima Repùblica Vèneta in Doge, at the apex of Venetian power as a state, had criminalized throwing perfumed eggs by masked men in appreciation of the women, of noble birth, they liked on the streets of Venice.
The purpose of the Carnevale di Venezia since 1268 was a period of abstinence, a farewell to meat, fruit, eggs and dairy products. Such a farewell had, in fact, characterized the lives of genius – the Indo-Aryan Brahmins, Pythogoras and Leonardo Da Vinci had not roasted a hunted bull and boar over a pit fire.
Flirting with elegant women, the men, perhaps unbeknownst to them, were enacting a Dionysian custom dating back to European antiquity (Venice Incognito By James H. Johnson), to ask the women to get a new life with them, carrying an even older Zoroastrian symbolism from the ancient Persian (Iranian) New Year celebration of Nowrooz and the onset of spring.
The word Nowrooz bears etymological resemblance to mean “new day” in many languages of the Indian subcontinent because of the Indo-Aryan roots of its peoples. Archaic horse-borne Aryans had engaged in sexual orgies of drunken (later Dionysian or Bacchanalian) revelry before their societies had settled into civilization, from nomadism, in the river valleys of the fertile crescent and Indus-Saraswati.
La Serenissima was governed by its people from Doge (a Zionist aspiration of Thodr Herzl in the 19th century), the head of all Venetian government – not unlike the United States since September 17, 1787 – in a delegation of power reciprocal to that in the United Kingdom of King John I and the Magna Carta of 1215 by the English Nobles who were seeking greater participation in English governance, again not unlike the United States since July 04, 1776.
This governance structure of Venice, of course, unmistakably had its origins in the City State of Athens of Pericles, Socrates and Plato, because the Serene Republic of Venice, one of the five of the Most Serene Republics during the period from the early Middle Ages as Rome ended to the Age of Enlightenment across Europe, had innovated the idea of representation of the citizens by the Nobles from the direct democracy of Pericles’ Athens (the other four Most Serene Republics were Genoa, Lucca, San Marino and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth).
The devolution of power from the people to usually those of Noble birth to rule over them in a society equal only under under law, of necessity, requires reconciling the hierarchy of social class with the equality that the law brings. A lawful society aspiring to social equality (or egalitarianism) masks its ineradicable inequalities in celebration during the carnevale that spring brings.
The Doge of Venice, which began its republic in the serenity of restraint as it rose to prominence because of being a trading port on the Adriatic which effectively contended the domination of Turkish Muslims who had conquered Mark Antony’s Byzantium (Eastern Roman Empire) after the assassination of Julius Caesar, had degenerated into tawdry eroticism by the late 18th century, with Venice selling its history, masks and blown glass, by day and its women by night. Its restraint had migrated to civilize the barbarians to its north and west.
The preference for mercantilism (or trade with other countries) to war to amass wealth to live better has become a salient feature of national and global institutions of economic governance, including Alan Greenspan’s and Ben Bernanke’s Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C, besides, of course, the usual suspects on Wall Street, known for their ostentatiousness with opulence.
Nobility of mind and conduct is subdued by the corruption of character in governance that comes from aiding and abetting wealth accumulation by abuse of power in the licentious pursuit of luxury through trade in flesh and material until all ambition is dissipated (Sketches From Venetian History, Volume II by Edward Smedley, also see permalink below).
When the society itself is structured to be perennially equal by occupational inheritance at birth – division and dignity of all labor, as the Indo-Aryans had instituted – no masks are necessary in Brindavan, the grove of Holy Basil.
Occupational choice by education makes societies even more equal because of occupational mobility. The overall level of beauty of the populace improves because rising standards and quality of living enable better nutrition.
In the revolt of the shadows of the mercantilist Noble against the Commoner by the Aristocracy and the Church, at stake is America since the days of Jefferson’s separation of Church and State and his anti-piracy laws of mind and matter, and modern economics since the moral philosophy of Adam Smith and, therefore, civilization.
