President Barack Obama, commiserating with the federal workers facing furloughs, is taking a pay cut of 5% to share in the sacrifice of the sequester. He wrote a check for $20,000 – or 5% of the $400,000 he gets paid annually by the tax payer to be president – to the US Treasury.
The president needs to shrink White House budget by 5% and furlough some workers. Instead he, without White House furloughs, is making a symbolic payment to signal that he is sharing in the pain of some federal workers not receiving pay for a few days.
The symbolism and political histrionics aside, it seems as though the president forgot what it means to be president: there should not have been a sequester to begin with had he and the Congress been on the job.
Mr President, the country needs leadership to fix its budget woes, not a $20,000 check to the US Treasury.
United States Department of the Treasury must return to the president his uncashed $20,000 check.
