The struggle for the establishment of the Ummah, as old as Islam itself, has taken an ugly turn with the declaration of the Khilafa or caliphate by the terrorist Islamic State. The precondition to achieve Ummah is transcendence within Islam – overcoming Shia and Sunni divisions – to establish a pan-Islamic state or Khilafa or caliphate as a successor state to Prophet Mohammed’s.
Several Muslim empires, caliphates, have existed before in history just as the Christian Holy Roman Empire and Byzantium. Europe, having tried bloody conflict, has entered into a peaceful compact among European states – a continuing project – known as the European Union (EU) containing within it the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).
The EU is an ambitious project whose ultimate goal is transnationalism, transcending the various divisions among the nations – political economic unity while celebrating cultural diversity. There appears to be no reason why the Islamic nations of the world should not embark on a similar project.
Islamic countries of the world must come together in their resolve to peacefully unite to form the Ummah following the European example. The first step in that process is the end of terrorism.
Islamic nations must work together with the West to eradicate ISIL.
